I’ve spent the weekend processing Ryan Pace’s third draft, and though it’ll of course ultimately be judged in several years by the success or failure of Trubisky, the cost of doing business, at least right now, looks too steep. Shaheen was our sixth-best remaining tight end on the board. I know, I know… Pace’s board is the only one that matters. But quarterback and tight end were two positions Pace invested a lot into in free agency with two individuals ($28.5 million guaranteed on Mike Glennon and Dion Sims), only to make these lavish picks with so many other holes? Shaheen comes from Division II and, regardless of his unique size-athleticism ratio, will require an acclimation period. Cohen and Morgan are two more intriguing small-school talents who may not help much initially, while Jackson could be exactly what the Bears need on the back end — a playmaker — if he’s healthy after two serious leg injuries in the past three years.
